The week of March 16-22, 2014 is Flood Safety Awareness Week. Knowing what to do before, during and after a flood can increase chances of survival. More deaths occur each year because of flooding than from any other severe weather-related hazard. More than half of all flood-related deaths result from vehicles being swept downstream. This year’s Flood Safety Awareness Week theme is “Turn Around. Don’t Drown”.

Go to www.floodsafety.noaa.gov to find an interactive flood map, information describing the different types of flooding, educational material, and resources on how the National Weather Service keeps you aware of potentially dangerous flooding situations.

The Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security director encourages residents to understand the risk of flooding in Franklin County, and take precautions to protect their families and homes before flooding occurs.
